Hi, I have PowerEdge 2900 server. Current configuration I see on OMSA: BIOS version 2.3.1 (old) Controller PERC 6/i Integrated. Firmware version is out of date. Firmware Version 6.0.2-0002 Minimum Required Firmware Version 6.3.0-0001 Driver Version 4.05.01.64 Storport Driver Version 6.1.7601.17577 I need to upgrade Controller firmware and do Windows updates on this server. My questions: Is this the correct order to do upgrade:. Windows updates.
A friend of mine downloaded some malware from Facebook, and I'm curious to see what it does without infecting myself. I know that you can't really decompile an.exe. Download. How can the answer be improved?
BIOS,. ESM firware,. SAS Backplane firmware,. Controller drives. Controller firmware. Yes, it is safe. It can be run from within the OS, or you can boot to SBUU and use SUU as the repository for the update packages.
In most cases, it is easier to update from Windows, but it is not necessary. Windows updates. BIOS,. ESM firmware (yes, needs to be updated with BIOS),. SAS Backplane firmware (also necessary),. Controller driver (did you mean driver here? Driver, when available, should be updated before firmware.
If running 2008R2, newer drivers are available through Microsoft Update - if available). Controller firmware.
Hard drive firmware. NIC, DRAC, etc. When/if getting update files from support.dell.com, use the Update Packages for Microsoft Windows format. Controller driver (did you mean driver here?
Driver, when available, should be updated before firmware. If running 2008R2, newer drivers are available through Microsoft Update - if available) Yes, I mean drivers, as I read if I won't update drivers first before updating firmware I won't be able even boot to my OS. So I want to avoid that and would like to known if controller drivers will be available and upgraded with SUU.

I checked Microsoft Updates and couldn't locate the driver for installation. Also should I restart server after installation of windows updates or can I proceed with installation of hardware updates? 'I won't update drivers first before updating firmware I won't be able even boot to my OS' This is possible, but not common. Still, it is good practice to update the driver first for that reason. Dell does not have any 2008R2 drivers (either standalone or as part of SUU), so if there exist new ones, then they would come to you through Microsoft Updates.
If Microsoft Updates does not offer you one (probably listed under Optional updates), then you don't need to worry about it. Always reboot whenever prompted before moving on to the next update, be it a Windows update or a firmware update.
