The Premise is not locked- it can change as production moves on 'Pre Production' is where you take the time to develop ideas- both visual and verbal. Many of the stages of pre production will be revisited until it's ready to be put into production. Using pre production as a time to plan will save time and money during production. The story board will be used a great deal at this stage. Think about: - medium you're using (3D stop motion, 2D animation, etc?) - Mood/atmosphere - time of day - action that will take place within it - shot type Production Animation Compositing Sound Post Production edit depending on the medium you have chosen, your budget and the size of your team, the duration of the animation process with vary. Low budget means less time animating. Big budget means the luxury of more time spent animating. Animators will be briefed on a shot before they start animating by the Director and Animation Director. Animation will often be reviewed with the Director and Animation Director- changes will be made throughout the process.
Test shots/animation sequences may be completed prior to when the animation team starts so they can understand the character's personality and movement. This is where the animation is put together with backgrounds, shots are cleaned up and any special effects are addeed. Here the shots will be placed in the timeline together. Some of the sequences may shift position in order to create a more fluid narrative structure.
Credits are added at this stage. An editor will complete this job, with guidance from the Director. Depending on the type of production, sound may have started prior to this point. Usually, however, animatics are given a rough soundtrack. It is after the animatic has been locked off that music composition will start. Foley (sound design) will begin once animation is complete, as any timed sounds (such as walking) can be added accurately.
Sounds are created by a Foley artist. Storyboards are used to create animatics. This is when boards are put on to a timeline to get a stronger idea of timing and pacing.

It is more than likely they will go through many edits. Most people suggest thumbnailing the boards as a good place to start to see how well your inital ideas flow.
